Different Types of Carpet
Carpets come in a wide variety. There are, in fact, many types of carpet to
choose from. Each type of carpet has something to offer every homeowner.
* Woven Carpet
Similar to woven cloth, woven carpets are created on a loom. Yarns of different
colors are used to create woven carpets with highly intricate designs. In the
carpet market, woven carpets command a high price since they are considered to
be carpets that are of the highest quality.
* Tufted Carpet
Tufted carpets are created using a tufting machine. Tufted carpets are usually
one-colored, and in some cases, a yarn with no color is used. In this case, the
tufted carpet is printed with a design or dyed. Tufted carpets are often
available as cut pile, loop pile or both. Tufted carpets are considered to be
low-end carpets.
* Needlefelt Carpet
Needlefelt carpets are a type of carpet that are made by electrostatically
attracting individual fibers in order to form highly durable carpets. Needlefelt
carpets are typically seen in hotels or in commercial areas where there is high
foot traffic.
* Flatweave Carpet
Flatweave carpets are produced by interlocking weft and warp threads. Soumak,
plain weave and tapestry weave are three types of oriental flatwoven carpets.
Flatwoven carpets are not so popular in North American. However, flatwoven
carpets are widely used in the Orient, specifically in Japan.
* Hooked Rug
Generally known as a handicraft, hooked rugs are a type of carpet made by
pulling wool or cotton strips through fabric meshes.
* Knotted Pile Carpet
Knotted pile carpets are produced by alternating the structural weft threads
with supplementary weft that comes up the weave's surface perpendicularly.
* Cut and Loop Piles Carpet
Both looped and cut fibers are used to create cut and loop pile carpets.
Typically, cut and loop pile carpets are durable and since they have several
layers, they do well in hiding dirt and footprints. Cut and loop carpets come in
solid colors or a variety of colors.
* Saxony Carpet
To create saxony carpets, cut piles are heat set straight and then tightly
twisted. Saxony carpets are made of two or more fibers that are twisted in a
yarn. Saxony carpets are good for both formal and informal areas. However, since
saxony carpets are very soft, footprints and vacuum cleaner marks tend to show
through.
* Textured Saxony Carpet
Because of their soft feel, textured saxony carpets are highly popular and are
widely used in informal areas. Textured saxony carpets are made from fabric that
have been tightly twisted, making this type of carpet durable. Textured saxony
carpets typically come in multi-colored patterns so footprints and tracks are
not so visible.
* Plush or Velvet Carpet
Plush and velvet carpets are created using lightly twisted fabrics. Often in
uniform color, plush and velvet carpets are soft and have a luxurious look to
them, which is why they are often used in formal areas.
* Frieze Carpet
Frieze carpets are a type of carpet made from highly twisted cut piles. Frieze
carpets are ideal for areas that receive high foot traffic because of short
fibers that curl in different directions on the surface, hiding footprints as
well as vacuum marks.
* Level Loop Pile Carpet
Level loop pile carpets are made by weaving even loops of yarn at both ends into
carpet backing. Level loop pile carpets are highly resistant to tracks and
footprints and they are very durable. For a more luxurious look, higher loops
are made.
