Simple, Do-It-Yourself Carpet Repairs
Carpets require maintenance. Carpets can get burned, crushed, start fading,
soiled and stained. While there are professionals who can clean, maintain and
repair your carpet, there are some carpet repair jobs that you can undertake
yourself.
Burns
If there is a smoker in your household, it is inevitable that your carpet will
be in contact with a cigarette butt or flame. If the burned area of the carpet
is small, you can easily repair the carpet by cutting the burnt fibers with a
pair of scissors. However, if the burned area is rather large, you may need to
patch the area or replace the entire carpet altogether. In this case, this kind
of job is best left to a professional carpet installer.
Fuzzing
If your carpet is beginning to show wear through loose fibers, simply snip the
fibers that are sticking out.
Furniture Marks
Carpet can have indentations when heavy pieces of furniture have been on it for
quite a while. You can easily remove these furniture marks on your carpet by
sprinkling club soda over the area and then placing a towel over it. Iron the
area a few times to "re-fluff" the carpet.
Shading, Crushing and Matting
If your carpet receives heavy foot traffic, its surface will become flattened
over time, giving it a shaded appearance. A quick solution is to brush the area
and follow it up with a vacuum. If you are unable to solve the problem yourself,
you can contact a professional to restore your carpet.
Shedding
Over time, the fibers on the carpet will begin to surface and shed. If you begin
to notice this on your carpet, take out your vacuum and vacuum over the area to
remove the fibers that have been shedding.
Snagging
After a while, the fibers on the carpet will start to snag. These snags are
actually the tufts that were pulled out from the carpet's surface. Know that
loop pile carpets will have more snagging than cut pile carpets. Never pull off
the snags; use a pair of scissors to snip them away instead.
Sprouting
Tuft carpets are prone to sprouting, which are noticeably longer than the rest
of the carpet fibers. Again, never pull on the sprouts. Snip them with a pair of
scissors.
Static Electricity
The material, construction and padding of the carpet determines how much static
it will receive. If you find that your carpet is becoming static, spray its
surface with an anti-static agent.
Carpet Beetles
Carpet beetles are quiet common in carpets that have been spilled often and have
morsels of food in it. To get rid of carpet beetles, vacuum over the area using
a strong suction. If the carpet beetles prove difficult to get rid off yourself,
call a professional cleaner.
Bleeding
A carpet is said to bleed if it loses its color or the color transfers from one
area of the carpet to the other. A quick solution to this is to place
underlayments.
Crocking
Crocking is what happens if you rub the carpet and the color disappears. The
simple solution to this is to not get the carpet wet.
