Carpet protection and buying carpets

Factors to Consider when Purchasing a Carpet

Go into any shop selling carpet and you will see a plethora of carpeting. Carpets come in a variety of styles, colors, textures and designs. Plush carpets, berber carpets, saxony carpets and commercial grade carpets are only a few carpeting choices available to you. Wall to wall carpets, carpet squares and carpets that can be cut to size are also available.

While the color of the carpet is an important factor to consider when you are looking to buy a carpet, a more important factor to consider is where the carpet is going to be installed and how much foot traffic the carpet will receive. If you are going to install the carpet in your living room then you will want to purchase a carpet that is highly resilient, one that can withstand heavy foot traffic in this particular area.

Another factor to consider when choosing a carpet is its resistance to stain. If the carpet is going to be installed in the dining room or play area, a carpet that is stain resistant is best since these are the areas in the home where spills are likely to occur on a frequent basis.

Know that carpets are rated. Carpets for indoor use are given a rating of 1 to 5, with 5 as the highest. For areas that receive heavy foot traffic, carpets with ratings of 5 and 4 are recommended. For areas that receive moderate foot traffic, carpets with a rating of 2.5 to 4 are ideal as these carpets are durable. Carpets with a rating of 2.5 and below are recommended for light traffic areas like bedrooms. When you choose a carpet based on the amount of traffic it will receive, this will help you save money.

Wool carpets are expensive carpets, although these carpets are of high quality. A wool carpet is very durable, so while the initial investment may be high, this type of carpet will bring you years of use. Wool carpets are highly resistant to soiling and it does not easily wear down or crush under heavy and continued used, unlike other carpets. The only disadvantage to wool carpeting is its cost.

If you can't afford wool carpeting, nylon carpets are your next best choice, especially if you are looking at carpeting for the heavy traffic areas in your home. Nylon is very durable, and stain and mildew resistant.

If you want a carpet that is durable, easy to clean and perfect for high traffic areas in the home, go with a carpet that is made either of olefin fiber or polyester fiber. Polyester carpets are able to repel water-based stains. Polyester looks and feels like wool, and is much more affordable than the real thing.

You can make a small room appear larger by using a light-colored carpet. However, keep in mind that light-colored carpets easily show stains and dirt. If you are after giving a room a cozy atmosphere, go with dark-colored carpets.
